WAP 1 locomotives was the first dedicated locomotive specially built to haul passenger trains by Chittranjan Locomotive Works. The first WAP 1 locomotive was used to run Kolkata-Delhi Rajdhani Express in 1980. The 3900HP WAP 1 was not only the first and most powerful locomotive for hauling passenger trains but was also capable of running at maximum speed of 130kmph. The basic design of these locomotives have been given various updates time to time to keep them running amongst the modern 25Kv AC electric locomotives.
