DMU stands for Diesel Multiple Unit & DEMU stands for Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit those are self driven trains and requires no locomotive to run. These trains are powered with on-board diesel engine and consist of one or two diesel engines coupled in front and back to meet requirement of running specific length of a train. Usually Indian Railways operates these trains in the areas where overhead electric wires are not available.
